Chapter 4c and 5a

Chapter 4C

One of the most important ideas from this section of the chapter is teacher-caused student misbehavior. There are multiple ways that this can happen but one that I think is most important is embarrassment. If as a teacher you embarrass your students you will lose the respect of the entire class. Something that I will be sure to work on when I am a teacher is avoiding putting my students in a position where they feel the need to misbehave. This section also lists mistakes to avoid. There are many that they list but they are important for teachers to keep their classroom ship floating.

Chapter 5A

This chapter deals with curriculum. For the purposes of the chapter curriculum is defined as the entire school program. I like to think of it as all of the course work designed for students. This section talks about the importance of planning a curriculum and instructional plan. One of the things I took away from reading this section is that even though there are state curriculum standards that must be followed, a middle school classroom can still be group and project oriented. When I am in the classroom I will be sure not to just teach to the standards through lecture and tests. The way students learn the material is still very important.

Chapter 4 A and B

4a

In chapter four the book talks about classroom management. One of the things that I liked about this chapter is that it talks about what classroom management means today versus what it meant in the past. I like that it talks about how now classroom management is about control rather than discipline. My favorite line from the book is the one that says the most important thing is for a teacher to be in control of behavior rather than have the behavior in control of the teacher. This is something I will most definitely apply to my classroom, I know that I need to be confident and in control.

4b

In this section of the chapter it talks about teacher response to student misbehavior. It shows how there is a difference between direct and indirect response, I think that this is a very important distinction that I will use in my classroom. The chapter also talks about how teachers can be the cause of misbehavior. It is important to know that students are always watching and picking up cues from you, the teacher. Modeling the appropriate behavior is one of the best and most important ways to manage a classroom.

Chapter 2 A and B

Chapter 2a:

It was interesting to learn about the professional responsibilities of a teacher. I found the section about the teacher being a decision maker to be very important. It talks about how decision making can be divided into four groups for instruction: the planning or preactive phase, the teaching or interactive phase, the analyzing and evaluating or reflective phase, and the application or projective phase. I will use this in my classroom because it talks about how important the reflective phase is. The chapter says that it is not so much about what we learn but about what we reflect on that we remember. I will make sure that my students use reflective thinking.

Chapter 2b:

I think that the behavior of teachers is often overlooked but is still very important. The chapter talks about how you must know what it is that is in your lesson plan in order to become a competent teacher of young adults. This goes back to being prepared for each class and each lesson and using your preparation while teaching. One thing that the chapter talks about that I will try and do in my classroom is keep a structured learning environment. This is very beneficial to young adults and will keep the classroom a place where students learn.

Chapter 1

From chapter 1 I learned a lot about the general workings of a middle school classroom and school year. Each middle school is not the same, it depends on what district a teacher is in as well is what the schedule for that school is. Schools are trending towards year round education or block scheduling. In chapter one I also learned about the behaviors of middle school students. Generally students are going through changes in their lives and it is our jobs as teachers to help them through those times. Chapter one was a helpful view into the general workings of a middle school classroom.
