Chapter 4 A and B

4a

In chapter four the book talks about classroom management. One of the things that I liked about this chapter is that it talks about what classroom management means today versus what it meant in the past. I like that it talks about how now classroom management is about control rather than discipline. My favorite line from the book is the one that says the most important thing is for a teacher to be in control of behavior rather than have the behavior in control of the teacher. This is something I will most definitely apply to my classroom, I know that I need to be confident and in control.

In this section of the chapter it talks about teacher response to student misbehavior. It shows how there is a difference between direct and indirect response, I think that this is a very important distinction that I will use in my classroom. The chapter also talks about how teachers can be the cause of misbehavior. It is important to know that students are always watching and picking up cues from you, the teacher. Modeling the appropriate behavior is one of the best and most important ways to manage a classroom.

  1. Ryan,

You are right about being in control of your classroom. I know this was something that I had to work on my first year of teaching a preschool classroom. They were just so sweet I had a hard time setting and sticking to limits. I am hoping that it will be better for you in a middle school environment, it can be hard to be firm with little ones :)

  2. Ryan, I like that you mentioned how as teachers it is important that we be role models for students. Modeling behavior of how you wish you're students to act is very important in an effective classroom. Thanks!
