Chapter 5 b and c

In this chapter I thought the dealing with controversy section was very interesting an important. It is impossible for a teacher to avoid controversial issues all together, however they can take steps to control what is talked about in their classrooms. At the same time, students are developing their own values and morals and value a teachers opinion on certain topics. As a teacher you should never speak before thinking on these topics. One thing that I will make sure I do in my classroom is to let the students hear all sides of an issue. It would be very unfair for me to just push my own views, I need to let the students decide on their own.

This section of the chapter begins by talking about the cognitive domain hierarchy. That hierarchy goes: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. This is very important in understanding how your students learn. When I am a teacher I will be sure to use this hierarchy to build students knowledge. One of my favorite things in this hierarchy is that they build on each other, if students don't have the knowledge and comprehension levels, they will not be able to reach the synthesis and evaluation.

  1. Remember to consider the affective and psychomotor domain hierarchies as well when creating learning objectives, and planning lessons.

  2. Ryan, I think it is great that you view controversial topics in this manner. I know that with history as a subject in class, there will be many opportunities to debate over controversial situations that have occurred over the years. I sure hope that you fulfill your goal and bring these into the classroom. Good for you, Ryan!
